GET OUT OF SIDE CONTROL. IT'S NOT A GOOD PLACE TO BE.

Obviously, we want to encourage you and not discourage you, grappler.  Side control is no place to hang out.  It's like walking into a bar filled with very unattractive people or a public bathroom with a mysteriously hideous odor.  Immediate departure is necessary.

There are many, many ways to get out of side control  Hopefully, you're training under a good coach and learning all the basics on a daily basis and reinforcing those skills via daily combat (aka free training or sparring, whatever you call it). But, more knowledge (in BJJ, at least) is, without question, a good thing.

Here's a technique from world-class UK black belt, Oli Geddes, that combines several solid movements to get you properly out of the mess you got yourself into.  Very smart and explained quite well.

IMPROVE YOUR GUARD, WITH A BODY HACK.

Taking care of your body is an essential part of our lives, or at least it should be. When we partake in sports, especially combat sports, we break our bodies down as well as strengthen them in many ways. Rehab and prehab have become important aspects of training, and today we give you some great exercises that will help any athlete, including those of us who grapple.

Liam Resnekov is a BJJ Blackbelt and owner of VT1 Gym in Australia. He joins us with his Physiotherapist, Corey, to show us some exercises that will improve our guard and increase strength and mobility. In video 2, they continue their exercises by focusing on internal and external rotation. No that doesn't mean you twisting around to reach the remote, it has to to the with hip, thigh, and groin complex. All essential parts of your guard game.

These videos bring a wealth of knowledge as well as Liam's other videos, which we have featured on our blog before. So, if your interested in Liam or VT1 gym, listen to his recent appearance on the on Joe Rogan Podcast.

Over the years , we've shared some inspiring stories of people overcoming adversity and disadvantage to become competitive grapplers.  Kyle Maynard's story and continued success in grappling, fighting and all manner of athletics is at the pinnacle of such stories.

Leave it to BJJ's very own Stuart Cooper to create yet another uplifting film about personal development and achievement.  We don't have to go on and on.  This little film speaks for itself.

Catch Wrestling Alliance Presents Rebirth of the Sport for the First Time in 100 Years in the United States at UCLA's John Wooden Center June 7th in Inaugural Catch Wrestling International Invitational - U.S.A. Vs. The World

Catch Wrestling is something I have held close to my heart for many years. Unfortunately, very few people get to experience the true essence of the sport and the art. All to often CACC get generalized into stereotypes of brutal guys with little skill who want to muscle submissions and crank people. While cranks and brutal subs art a part of the art, there is so much more, which includes a scientific approach to fighting and grappling. Typically we go on a rant here and give a brief history lesson, but quite frankly we don't have time for that.

What we do have time for is to announce an event that is the first of its kind here in the modern US. Life long martial artist, and avid catch wrestler, Raul Ramirez has established the Inaugural Catch Wrestling Alliance International Invitational that is taking place on June 7th.

“There hasn’t been an event like this in the United States in nearly 100 years. I’m proud to be part of the rebirth of real wrestling. It is every Catch Wrestler’s dream to see Catch Wrestling in the spotlight again. My goal is to reinstate legitimate catch wrestling competition globally. We can achieve this goal if we work together.” -Raul

Don't miss out on this great event and for more info check out the website and read more below!

Months ago, we set out to come up with something ridiculous to propose to our buddy, Matt, at Scramble for a rash guard collaboration.  Behold, grapplers.  The fruits of our labor.

The DSTRYR/SG X SCRMBL "Grapplers of the Universe" rashy main art was created by Montreal-based artist, MEKA. We designed the rest in direct collaboration with the Scramblers and voila.  What does it mean?  We like to think it means Jiu Jitsu is fun, so don't worry about it.

Since D/SG is based here in the US and Scramble in the UK, we're both offering up the rash guard for presale to buyers in our respective countries (i.e., US buyers for DSTRYR/SG and UK for Scramble).  The rest of the world is a free for all!  If you'd like to buy one (and be a badass with amazing taste), we'll begin a very short run pre-sale starting on May 30, 2014.  Visit storedestroyer.com.

As we stated a few weeks ago, Judo doesn't get its fair share of respect or coverage in the grappling world. Yes, many of us may not necessarily like what Judo has become in the sense of the sport, but that doesn't stop us from watching it or appreciating the Japanese grappling style.

The 2014 European Seniors Judo Cup took place in London recently, and as promised, we bring you some of the highlights and medal matches of the competition. Watch and enjoy grapplers!

We featured the brutal art of Kudo two years ago with a Russian TV feature by movie star and martial arts badass, Sergey Badyuk. If your not familiar Kudo, it's the child of several fighting styles that includes Kyokushin karate, boxing and several grappling styles such as, Judo, Sambo and Russian-All-Around fighting. The Soviet influences were added in the early 90's when the art migrated from Japan to Russian. In many ways the style looks similar to our Amateur MMA. Kudo along with several other hybrid fighting style have taken off over the past 20 years and has lead to the increase in popularity of MMA.

Sport Kudo allows almost everything with the exception punches to the back and neck. Kudo along with Combat Sambo have been a launching pad for Russian Martial Artists to enter into MMA, as we have see in both Bellator and the UFC.

Enjoy the style of Kudo below and if your interested in some hype videos you have check them out here and here.

THE MUNDIALS 2014 HIGHS AND LOWS.

So far 2014 is flying by fast, and once again it was time for the IBJJF Mundials. The best of the best gathered mid-last week through Sunday to compete at the World Championships, at California State University in Long Beach, California.

Rivalries were in full play this weekend, pinning arch enemies against each other. We saw some incredible matches including the Absolute final, one half of the Meow's scoring 25 points in a match and the Estima/Barral duo closing out medium heavy. Both Mendes brothers took gold, and once again in Feather weight Rafa and Cobrinha battled it out in a close match, as their rivalry continues. The biggest rivalry of them all was Buchecha v Rodolfo, in a continuation of last years battle which you can check out below.

There were not to many lows, but we saw Cavaca lose via controversial referee's decision, and Andre Galvao upset by Felipe Pena in the heavyweight final. Some also may call the last minute advantage point for Gui Mendes over Paolo Miyao, a bit strange, but overall it was a great event!

Check out our list of Black Belt medalists and the absolute finals match below. Stay tuned, as the week goes on and we will have even more matches posted.

As we stated yesterday, Dstryrsg as a grappling entity, is both on top of things and well lubed...

That being said we bring you more fight footage of last weekends many events. If you missed it, yesterday, we posted our Exclusive images of the Worlds 2014. Among the many events going on (in particular the Worlds) the Eddie Bravo Invitational (EBI) took place and was somewhat overlooked.

Eddie hosted a Metamoris style event that showcased some very talented grapplers, many of which hailed from his team. The biggest names on the card were Jeff Glover and Gary Tonnon. If you didn't know about the event or have time to watch them, now is your chance. So limber up, get comfortable, and grab a box of tissues - it's time to grapple.

And, just like that.  Bam!  More badass exclusive pic from last weekends IBJJF Worlds (black belt divisions), this time from mystical shooter, BRONIN.

Listen.  We don't f@ck around when it comes to bringing you exclusive, incredible shots from the worlds best event.  However, we might f@ck around a little bit when it comes to bringing them to you in a timely manner.  And, the only thing we can say is ... Worm Guard.

MASTER OF SAMBO UNIVERSE - IGOR YAKIMOV.

Igor Yakimov is a legend in the Sambo world, and that's why we want to give him the attention he deserves today. Igor is a Master of Sports in Sambo, Judo World Champion, National Sambo Champion and he is head trainer of Sambo Canada and President of the United Federation of Russian Sambo (UFRS). His accomplishments in the sport are lengthly, and we suggest picking up his book or his DVD's if your impressed with the video below.

Recently, Igor hosted a Sambo clinic at Takahashi Martial Arts in Ottawa, Ontario Canada and he shows off some very fluid and dynamic grappling in the video below. Watch the vid, learn some Sambo history, and then watch Igor throw and lock his students with ease. Of course Igor generously shares a ton of leg locks intended to destroy first day students and White Belts - perfect for next time you hit the mats.

YOU AIN'T SEEN PICS FROM EBI UNTIL YOU'VE SEEN OUR EXCLUSIVE PICS FROM EBI.

Why? Because we're just way cooler and grapplier than anyone else. But, you know this. Once again, we sent our lens-wielding warrior, Bronin out to snap the best pics of the inaugural Eddie Bravo Invitational. Excellent stuff, and we expect nothing less.

Side Note:  I was unable to attend the event, but I give it the DSTRYR/SG stamp of approval for mustache and beard presence alone.  IBJJF and it's unfortunate fauxhawk-wearing athletes can't touch that.

LUTA LIVRE LOCKFLOWS FOR DAYS.

Some people consider the pinnacle of mastery a point where a practitioner can chain multiple high level techniques together to create a seamless, virtually uninterrupted flow, with maximum efficiency. For others it's mastering the berimbolo and wormguard, yet not knowing how to breakfall correctly.

Since the World Cup kicked off last week in Brazil, we are keeping it native with Luta Livre submission grappling. Today's submission chain is brought to us by Kinetik Grappling LL. That means it's time to put down your vuvuzela and learn today's beautiful series of attacks.

THE WORM GUARD AND YOU.

$

0

To our knowledge, the lowly worm's characteristics have never been attributed to a badass fighting styles.  That's reserved for tigers, cobras, monkeys and drunken people.  Plus, worms are pretty icky.  But, now they're cool.

Jiu Jitsu is a fast evolving sport/martial art.  So fast that, just a month, or so ago, you and I had never heard of worm guards.  And, now, thanks to Keenan Cornelius, it's all you and your kid sister want to talk about.  It's like the dub-step of Jiu Jitsu (and Skrillix is the Keenan).  I think you know what I mean.

Let's bottom line this - should you attempt to learn this technique?  No.  Probably not.  Not because it's not kickass and crafty in all the best ways.  Because, most likely, you're just not good enough at Jiu Jitsu for this to make a difference for you.

"Screw you, DSTRYR!  I'm gonna train whatever techniques I want," you may say.  And, it's true.  You can do that.  But, I offer this bit of clarity.  Just as the yeoman boxer or judoka must master the basic elements of their crafts before moving on to more advanced, journeyman-level techniques, so to must the Jiu Jitsu fighter.  The worm guard is not even in the last chapter of the Book of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.  It's in the Appendix.  So there.

[Side Note: You're going to try learning it anyway, thanks to the internet.]

TAKE IT FROM THE BACK - THE GUILLOTINE THAT IS.

What is this world coming to? Every time I open up my browser or turn on the TV, I get overwhelmed with the craziness of the World we live in.

For example -
Apparently, the worm guard is the hottest thing on the mats, Scott Coker replaces Bellator President Bjorn Rebney, Spain is eliminated from the World Cup and the Redskins will be know as some ambiguous symbol and referred to as "The team formally known as the Redskins."

I don't have words to express my feeling toward any of the above - other than surprise. That's why we decided to bring you a technique that will surely be a surprise attack on your opponent. MMA and Martial arts bad ass (also 3x survivor of cancer) Greg Nelson, shows us an attack from the back that ends in a surprise guillotine.

BECOME MAYOR McSNAP OF WRIST-LOCK CITY.

That's right.  We just did one of those mayor of "insert stupid joke here" city puns and we did it with total impunity. Literally, there is nothing you can do to us to get us to stop our shameless and suspect writing style.

You know what else can't be stopped?  You, getting wrist-locked by some random would-be wrist-lock master who's watched a few grainy YouTube videos  So, whether or not you want to attack the wrist or not, you need to know the basic ins and outs of the submission. And, what better way than by studying this incredible video on wrist-locks and Fredson Paixao's philosophy on them by none other than BJJ Hacks (these guys are very, very good).

Here's an extra pointer - if you really wanna piss someone off (e.g., your wife and/or girlfriend, your grandmother), practice these locks on them in plain clothes and with no warning whatsoever. They will hate you for it.

FIRST RULE OF HINDU CONTROL - MAINTAIN PROPER FACIAL HAIR.

$
0
0

In a world where berimbolos and inverted guards were last weeks craze, techniques tend to fall by the wayside when the new trend approaches - aka the worm guard. If you missed last week's post about the worm (check it out here.)

If your familiar with 10th Planet JJ, you are well aware of the heavy use of rubber guard in place of regular closed guard. As 10thPJJ evolves, so have it's guard players (slowly evolving into long, lean flexible gumbys.) The rubberguard has continued to evolve for those gifted with freakish flexibility - Thus the creation of the Hindu control.

Ben Eddy, 10th Planet Purple sleeve, shows us not only how to sport an incredible face of hair, but also how to control your opponent using "Hindu Control." Ben shows us how he pulled off his Hindulotine at the Eddie Bravo Invitaional that took place a few weeks ago.

So, do we suggest attempting the rubber guard? - Only if you're willing to work on your flexibility. Start with the rubber guard, move to the meathook, and if you want a challenge yourself try hindu control. Even if this guard isn't you cup of tea, or acai, it's worth learning the technical aspects of Hindu Control.

I SAY LAAMB, YOU SAY LUTTE, WE ALL SAY LION HEART INITIATIVE.

If your new to the Laamb, then we suggest you read our previous posts here. Laamb is the native folk style of wrestling found in Western Africa. Depending on the particular country it can be called Laamb, Lutte Traditionnelle, or Evala.

In fact, not to long ago, Vice did a feature on African Wrestling you can check out here. Surprising to us and probably most of you, Pro wrestling is huge in West Africa and in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Anyway, Today's video is about The Lion Heart Initiative. "LHI is a non-profit endeavor to introduce and develop mixed martial arts (MMA) in West Africa. The initiative aims to introduce urban youth to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), Muay Thai, and modern reality-based MMA; concurrently, allowing visiting martial artists to experience indigenous West African wrestling."

Take a look at this trailers from MMA videographer extraordinaire, Genghis Con. This documentary took place in November of 2013 and details the Journey of the LHI in Dakar and Senegal to spread BJJ, MT and MMA. Of course cross-training took place with traditional Laamb wrestlers in Senegal and much more, so check it out!
