Years ago, I blatantly assaulted the DLR guard and its players here on D/SG. At the time, for me, it was all about beating the Del La Riva guard. I was in turn mocked by one of my own teammates for being a stodgy, soon-to-be behind-the-times BJJ cruster who refused to advance with the progress and modern techniques of the current BJJ era. Lesson learned. Embrace the new school.
You're about to watch Gianni Grippo face off against Darson Hemmings in a super new school battle at Five Grappling's inaugural event held last week. It illustrates that, if you ain't passing from standing, leg dragging, De La Riva guard pulling, inverting and berimbolo-ing, you probably ain't doing it right. At least not in 2013. Now, maybe that isn't entirely true. But, if you're not careful, one of these days, a tuned-up blue belt's gonna blast a very speedy and precise b-bolo on you while your inhaling for .25 of a second and it will be curtains for you. It almost happened to me last week. Enjoy.
