I think it's pretty safe and not very controversial to say that Rafa Mendes is the most popular and, probably, the most admired BJJ pro competitor in the world right now. Notwithstanding his narrow loss at World's last year, he stands alone, I think, as the most emulated and innovative grappler on the planet. And, he's been consistently beating all challengers handily for several years now.
Cut to the semi-finals at IBJJF Euros and you see why he's so fu*king great. Gianni Grippo is a freshly minted black belt, but he's easily a top, top guy in the lightweight's already. Watching this match, despite it going the distance, you really get to see Rafa's mastery of his own style. His guard pass is some seriously exquisite sh*t. Enjoy.
